Fan Girl Friday

December 5, 2008 | Fan Girl Friday

Yesterday, someone asked what I was reading at the moment. I confessed to having a pile of books. There are times when I read more than one book. And I’m not the only one, who does this.

I have a morning book, for starting the day off right. I have a non-fiction autobiography I read a chapter of in the evenings. And then I have my bedtime treat read.

Last week, the treat read was The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran. It is a historical romance, but not a regency (shocking, yes but, I do read other eras on occasion).

I’m not entirely sure how I came to purchase this book. It may have been an Amazon recommended, for you, title, or other shoppers, like you, bought this, or simply a case of careless pointing and clicking. I do recall opening the book box and greedily examining each novel then frowning at this one, not recognizing either the title or the author. But, I added it to the historical section of the TBR shelves. Eventually, I selected it to read.

A new author with nothing special to recommend them is going to get twenty five pages to impress me–unless they commit some egregious error before that and get tossed. Ms. Duran didn’t need twenty five pages–she had me hooked from the start.

The story begins in India during the first native rebellion against British rule. The history is impeccable, the writing assured, and the characters alive between the covers. Even better than all that, the pacing is breathless. I can’t remember the last time I read a romance eagerly turning the pages to learn what happens next, straining my eyes to read just one more chapter.

Here’s the link to learn more about The Duke of Shadows.
