I was thinking about movies, which I like as much as books. But, in an entirely different way.
1) I love great dialogue–funny, romantic, poignant, scary it’s all good as long as there are a couple of great lines I’m going to repeat in my head over and over again.
2) There does need to be a story, but it can be much slighter. It is a visual medium. The right actors, the right camera shots, and a million details can be conveyed without an elaborate storyline.
3) I love underdogs and long odds and desperate chances.
4) I like to visit another world, place, or time. I was enthralled by the Duchess, set in Regency England. Oh my! I was equally riveted by Star Wars, and the Terminator. They are all far from my everyday life.
5) I like musicals. I seem to be their only fan.
6) I like romantic comedies, action packed thrillers, but not usually scary movies.
As I write this, I’m reading Thomas Perry’s Metzger’s Dog, which is brilliant, exciting, and funny. Makes me regret not reading it sooner.
But, I so love the Jane Whitefield series that I worried I’d be disappointed. Yeah, that sounds irrational to me too.
Experience with authors who write more than one series, or more than one genre, has made me wary. There are few voices that work for me whatever they’re writing.
Since I write multiple series myself, my prejudice is ever more weird.
Another, slightly more robust Iris Reticulata. Located across the yard from the blue variety–they bloom at least a week earlier. For more information about these little charmers you can google away or simply go here .
When I set goals for completing so many words a day or a week, I try to be realistic. Most of the time I achieve my objective. But, other times…life happens and interferes with my plans.
Last week I caught a cold. After stumbling around for a couple of days trying to pretend I was fine, I decided sick leave should be a perk of self-employment.
Now, I’ve recovered from the cold, but all the normal daily living tasks have piled up. So, I decided vacation days should also be a perk of self-employment.
I’m a little dismayed how easily I can fill my days without a word getting written. Hopefully, dedication returns–soon.
Are you a self-starter or do you need outside motivation?
Here’s the long blurb for Dalila’s Choice . Have I mentioned it’s available this month?
Arriving in orbit around Enyo, Dalila is prepared to carry out her orders to conquer the hostile warriors by any means necessary. But, warriors shoot first and ask no questions. Blasted out the sky, her damaged ship plunges into a stormy sea. Rescued by intimidating twin brothers, she is stranded on a remote island. Her weapon training, hand-to-hand combat skills, and sketchy mind control instructions didn’t prepare her for dealing with the overwhelmingly male warriors. In desperation, she wields a dangerous new weapon, sex appeal.
The attraction between the three of them is a two-edged blade, slicing her as deeply as it does the men. She’s instantly drawn to Kelvar, who saved her from drowning. His raw male instincts, strength, and honor fail to hide a tender heart. His twin, Dexon secured her damaged spacecraft, incurring serious injury. When she tends his wound, she awakens a potent desire. Now, she’s caught between two men. Their law demands she chose. She has only three days to decide. One twin will be her mate for life. The other will die. But, how can she choose between the two fierce warriors, when both have captured her heart?
When I’m looking for a hero, strictly for the sake of bringing you the best possible story I can deliver, I’ve given some thought to what makes a man sexy as hell attractive.
Here’s the short list:
1) A nice body. Now, six-packs and perfection are all well and good but he doesn’t need to be perfect like this guy.
2) Honorable, even bad boys have to have standards.
3) Flaws, perfect is just plain irritating, and besides, it makes me suspicious about what he’s hiding.
4) Loyalty, what kind of hero wouldn’t stand by his friends and, more importantly, his woman?
5) Smart, sorry but the dumb guys don’t get the starring roles
6) Strong, inside and out he’s got to have courage–this doesn’t mean he’s never scared, just that he does the right thing anyway.
The other day, Sheila blogged about e-readers, you can read her post here. .
Strangely, I’d just read an article on the same subject. You can find it here .
But, I’ll summarize for those who are too busy to surf. Just substitute horse for print book and car for e-book. Are they perfect? No. Are there still issues to work out before everyone is using them? Yes. Are they inevitable? Yes.
If you’re spitting and hissing, not me, never. I’m all sympathy, I’d much rather ride a horse than drive a car myself. But, technology offers irresistible convenience.
