Things I want in a romance hero–
1) Honorable–even bad boys need a strong set of core values
2) Courageous–when the chips are down he makes the right choice
3) Loyal–he can be a hell hound prior to meeting the heroine, but that ends when she enters his life
4) Attractive–he doesn’t need to be beautiful, but he must be physically appealing to the heroine
5) Flawed–now what fun would a reasonable paragon be?
6) Dangerous–if he’s entirely safe then there’s not enough tension
What do you want in a hero?
I’m a moody reader. Usually, my idea of great summer book is something thick and meaty that I have to set down now and then so I can reflect on the beauty of the prose or the depth of the author’s meaning. Maybe, something by Proust.
But then, I’m also impulsive. Shannon Butcher’s name floated across my avaricious reader’s radar the other day and I promptly ordered the first of her titles–No Regrets. I did this without even a notion of what the story was about. Insane optimism.
In this case it paid off. I was impressed. Now, I feverently hope she’s one of those writers that improve with each title. Because, I sent for more. Why not? Optimism worked before. ;)
On Thursdays I don’t get a lot of writing done. I run around attending to the real world stuff, grocery shopping, gas, and errands are all lumped into Thursday. Add in the daily chore list, plus a little socializing, and it makes for a full day.
When Friday rolls around, I’m eager to get back to the story. The break works for me like a day apart from a new lover. ;)
The story people are imaginary–most of the time I’m clear on that subject. But, when I’m writing they seem very real.
Whether reading or writing, do the characters ever become real to you?
When it comes to readers, I’m real open minded. ;) Frankly,, I do not care about what their gender, sexual orientation, politics, race, or religious affliations are. But, I’m aware that the odds favor my readers being female and over twenty-five.
I like that demographic–women are more adventurous readers.
Sometimes, I fantasize about an ideal reader. What does she want in an erotic fantasy?
My guess is–escapism, a blend of the familiar, spicy surprises, exotic locales, strong heroes, scrappy heroines, and something deliciously naughty….
Further, she wants, and I believe she deserves, to have her fantasy served in a tasteful cover, well-written, professionally edited, and reasonably priced.
There aren’t very many publishers delivering this wish list, surprisingly–or perhaps not–most of them are e-publishers.
Who delivers your favorite flavor of fantasy?
If I’m lucky someday Dangerous Secrets will be out in print. If that happens then the back cover will read something like this–unless the talented editor has a better idea. ;)
For five long years, Sam has lived for the chance to avenge the murders of his family. When his enemy comes to Jamaica, it’s finally time for him to exact justice.
His troubles have only begun.
Along with the arrival of his mortal enemy comes Karina, the only woman who can heal his wounded soul. While he worries about endangering his love, what he doesn’t know may kill him. Because, the love of his life is his worst nightmare–his enemy’s daughter.
