When I’m building characters, or more accurately revealing them, I always give each of them at least one personal quirk. Simply, because I like anyone, who’s living in my head, to share some of my foibles. ;)
So here’s six of my oddities–
1) I enjoy public speaking. Yeah, this alone qualifies me as weird. Most people rank public speaking with root canals on their list of enjoyable pastimes.
2) Speaking of root canals, I’ve never had one. But, they don’t sound like fun.
3) I’ve never had a broken bone, or even a sprain.
4) I adore learning, if I could figure out a way to get paid to attend universities–I could become one of those perpetual students, who acquire doctorates the way other women collect shoes.
5) The above should not be construed as a dislike of shoes, boots, and sandals. Those are all very cool.
6) I always cheer for the underdog.
Go ahead comment with your own quirks–I won’t tell anybody. :)

Last month, I read Nalini Singh’s Angel’s Blood, excellent and addictive. My copy of J.R. Ward’s Covet is winging it’s way to me as I write this (I’m confident I’ll love it and be totally hooked, praying that it’s a series she continues). And Samhain is seeking submissions for a new angels and demons anthology.
Do I smell a new trend in paranormal romance?
Personally, I have no angels, dark, guardian, or fallen clamoring in head. Demons, on the other hand, are yelling at me pretty much non-stop. I’ve written one of their stories and they really need to chill. The pirates have been very patient. And patience is not one of their strong suits. ;)

As I type Dangerous Secrets is now available in print! All you diehard paper or nothing fans can order your very own copy here.
I just realized that I’ve failed to mention anywhere on this site that all of Dangerous books are available in print as well as electronic files in a wide variety of formats to fit your e-reader, I-pod, cell phone, palm pilot, Sony or Kindle. In fact on the mobi-pocket site they have a whole section devoted to different reading devices. :)
As cool as it was to have two releases in a single month, and a new title in print, I don’t see it happening again any time soon. :( It still takes me longer than I’d like to write a story, and I have zero input on the release schedule.
My aspiration is to have four releases a year. Given the lead time between contract and release, I need to get more submissions into the lovely editor’s virtual in box to have any hope of four dangerously sexy titles being available during 2010.
Actually, I’d love to have more than four releases–but, I’m trying to be realistic. ;) First, I have to write them–never as easy as it sounds. Second, I have to polish them up and submit them–even more work. And then, the tasteful editor has to take a chance on them.
Sometimes, gracious editors decline–shocking, I know but there you are. Selling is never a sure thing. If the story is accepted then it has to slotted into the publication calendar. As I write this, the 2010 schedule is filling up fast.
Back to work. :)

The decision to allow myself a really rough first draft, moved my writing ahead. Sounds like a really bad plan, doesn’t it? Does to me. And yet, it has worked. A second, third, or fourth draft makes a world of difference. ;)
I handle plotting the same way, accepting that it will have revisions. Yes, revisions are inconvenient. The balance between speed and quality is still a tough call. However, I can put a plot draft aside for a week or two and not gain any significant perspective. The flaws only become apparent after I’ve lived with the characters for months.
With the manuscript, real detachment takes even longer. In a perfect world, I’d get a couple of books ahead, and let them marinate for months, maybe a year before polishing and submitting.
This brings up another personal choice, lots of authors sell on proposal. That list includes some of my favorites. ;) The very idea of pitching a story I haven’t written makes me edgy. I always have a real solid draft of the story done before I pitch it to an editor.
Lately, I’ve been thinking that since I write series, I should have a couple of stories in the pipeline before I try to market the first. I haven’t done anything about this, just a stray wouldn’t-that-be-terrific thought.

What with the pushy demons and one thing and another, I’m just now getting into the second pirate book–Pirate Games. But, I know a few things and I thought I’d give you all a peek into my current obsession.
First, the series is more open ended than I originally knew. Lex, the hero of book two is one of a squad of former special forces members. His team was sent into a trap, where half of the team was slaughtered. Injured, betrayed, and half crazy with grief, he retaliated. Without proof they;d been set up, the survivors were sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
When a new piracy ring becomes a political nightmare, the incarcerated team is needed to retrieve a hostage. Their freedom and a full pardon are the reward–if they survive.
What do you all think? Dangerously sexy?

Six reasons I really need a Kindle–
1) All the free titles, seriously that almost pushed me over the edge.
2) Traveling with a whole library of favorites and TBR titles
3) Instant gratification–I haven’t tried the Whispernet download, but it sounds wonderful
4) The potential elimination of many shelves of print books–I love books, but they take up space, collect dust, and are darn heavy–a major drawback if one wants to spend six months living on a sail boat. Or move to modern condo overlooking the city or the water or both. I have no plans to do any of those things, but options have a lot of appeal….
5) Economy–really ;) Kindle versions are discounted–depending on the number of books purchased, the devise could pay for itself in a year.
6) Convenience–a library tucked into my purse, what could be nicer?
Do you have an electronic reader? Are you happy with your reader? Do tell, inquiring minds and all that jazz…. ;)

The other day I skimmed through some current romance reviews–not mine. ;)
One stopped me cold. The reader was vastly disappointed in the erotic romance she’d just read, because the central conflict was too similar to other titles by the same author.
Her comments made me wonder if she read much. Most authors have themes either conscious or unconscious. This is the reality of genre fiction. In a series, the common threads that unite the stories is even more pronounced.
This doesn’t bother me. The repetition that irritates me is within a story, when a certain description or catch phrase is used over and over again. Ironically, the more clever and memorable the original version the more irritating the repetitions become.
Tell me about your pet reading peeves.

Twice a year, spring and fall, I get the urge to spruce up the inside acomodtions. Partly, it’s a calendar phenomena–related to the seasonal change. The other factor is the weather.
The calendar can announce it’s spring, but if the gray skies and chill of winter is still lingering I have no urge to strip off the flannel sheets, replacing them with crisp linen, tuck away the boots and dig out the flip-flops.
At the moment, the calendar and weather are in sync enough that I’m powering through the outside chores so I can make the inside all warm and cozy.
What’s your favorite part of autumn?
