The other day I skimmed through some current romance reviews–not mine. ;)
One stopped me cold. The reader was vastly disappointed in the erotic romance she’d just read, because the central conflict was too similar to other titles by the same author.
Her comments made me wonder if she read much. Most authors have themes either conscious or unconscious. This is the reality of genre fiction. In a series, the common threads that unite the stories is even more pronounced.
This doesn’t bother me. The repetition that irritates me is within a story, when a certain description or catch phrase is used over and over again. Ironically, the more clever and memorable the original version the more irritating the repetitions become.
