The decision to allow myself a really rough first draft, moved my writing ahead. Sounds like a really bad plan, doesn’t it? Does to me. And yet, it has worked. A second, third, or fourth draft makes a world of difference. ;)
I handle plotting the same way, accepting that it will have revisions. Yes, revisions are inconvenient. The balance between speed and quality is still a tough call. However, I can put a plot draft aside for a week or two and not gain any significant perspective. The flaws only become apparent after I’ve lived with the characters for months.
With the manuscript, real detachment takes even longer. In a perfect world, I’d get a couple of books ahead, and let them marinate for months, maybe a year before polishing and submitting.
This brings up another personal choice, lots of authors sell on proposal. That list includes some of my favorites. ;) The very idea of pitching a story I haven’t written makes me edgy. I always have a real solid draft of the story done before I pitch it to an editor.
Lately, I’ve been thinking that since I write series, I should have a couple of stories in the pipeline before I try to market the first. I haven’t done anything about this, just a stray wouldn’t-that-be-terrific thought.
