Fan Girl Friday

Since I read about a hundred times faster than I write, I need lots of book recommends. One of my favorite places to check reviews is Smexy Books . Even when I don’t agree with Mandi’s assessment, I enjoy her take on books.

Real Life

November 19, 2009 | Real life

Whenever I think I’m not getting enough done, I remind myself there are six dangerously sexy titles with 2009 release dates.

Frankly, I doubt I’ll ever equal that quantity. But, I aim to try. ;)

WIP Wednesday

By the time you read this, I hope real life has settled down to the usual dull roar and the word meter is moving.

Currently, I’m wild about the story, but not getting nearly enough time to dump the exciting scenes in my head onto the hard drive.

Maybe, part of the problem is I’m writing out of sequence, this is the second demons and dragons book and by rights I should be working on Book Three of the Enyo Chronicles. But, I’m already having enough trouble sorting out the story lines and cast of characters bouncing through what passes for my mind.

Teaser Tuesday

November 17, 2009 | Teaser Tuesday

Here’s another unedited excerpt from Wicked Business coming in December from New Concepts Publishing!

Eduardo retrieved his cell phone, thumbing through the menus until he found the photo Miguel had sent earlier in the week. A grin quirked the corners of his mouth. His fishing expedition had paid a lovely dividend.

The investigation he’d authorized, seeking proof that would convict his father’s killer, had revealed unexpected details of the agency’s surveillance. The newest team member, Desiree Joy Tyler, was inexperienced. In fact, this was her first field assignment. She’d been included for her language skills. Something he needed to remember. With her listening, there was no need for a translator. And no delay.

He studied Desiree’s already familiar features. She was exquisite. Every time he looked at her, he had to remind himself sternly she was the enemy.

And yet, no less an authority than, the great General Sun Tzu had said, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” Excellent advice.

She was one enemy he absolutely wanted to keep close. His lips straightened while he reluctantly turned off the display, and then pocketed the phone.

As his evening was unfolding, staring at the government’s spy might turn out to have been the highpoint.

It had started with his brother-in-law’s call for help with his wife. Eduardo’s sister, Elena, constantly added fresh complications to everyone’s life. Julian sounded more fed up than worried, although it made no difference. If his family needed him, Eduardo went.

Six things I’ve suddenly noticed I have way too much of–

1) Books

2) Plants

3) Sewing notions

4) Tools

5) Clothes

6) Junk

If you were moving tomorrow what would you get rid of?

Fan Girl Friday

November 13, 2009 | Fan Girl Friday

As I mentally survey the groaning book shelves, I think about which ones are definitely moving with me.

Reference books top the list. Writing craft, dictionaries in several languages, cookbooks, gardening books, sewing books are all on the safe list. Then it gets tough.

The classics are moving. The unread are going. The favorites are getting sorted. The key question is will I read them again. The answer isn’t always entirely obvious.

Six groaning full-sized and three half-sized bookcases require decisions. Even after I set aside the coming with me for sure group, there’s still a lot of books to sort.

You see what I mean about a Kindle, not that it would replace all paper books, but fifteen hundred titles would go a long way to ease the are-they-worth-moving choices.

By the way, the Black Dagger Brotherhood–definitely moving. Covet, no. It was good, but I have no urge to reread it.

Do you revisit favorite books? Or is once always enough?

Real Life

November 12, 2009 | Real life

A couple of years ago, when the house was undergoing some urgently needed repairs, the neighbors would ask if I were putting it on the market. I reassured them that I was staying.

There are things I love about this house and very little that needs upgrading. But, I’m not wild about the location, plus it’s more house than I need and more garden too. Having too much room, and too much yard are not big problems, but there’s nothing keeping me here.

I’d rather have a smaller house and smaller garden further away from the city. Less upkeep means more time for writing and real life. A wonderful improvement since neither is getting enough time right now.

The effect of the decision is an immediate time loss as I look around me, realizing how much stuff I don’t want to move. A smaller house couldn’t hold all this stuff. A Kindle is looking better and better. ;)

WIP Wednesday

November 11, 2009 | WIP Wednesday

Continuing with my quest to become a better writer and my penchant for writing series–another thing I’d like to get better at is figuring out how much of the past installments need to be included. My current answer–as it relates to the pirate series–is practically nothing.

If characters from a previous episode put in an appearance, it’s a wink and smile for those who’ve followed the series. For those just now joining the action, all they need is just enough information to understand the current situation. Previous episodes are like backstory–a little goes a long ways.

Closely related to the insertion of past events is world building. A trickier area for me.

The first story in a series bears the heaviest burden to create the special world with enough detail to make it come alive for the reader. Subsequent installments need that same magic, but repeating the descriptions from the early stories is boring for the faithful fans who’ve read each installment. The same quandary applies to recurring characters. The faithful need reassurance that their beloved hero or hated villain retains his essential qualities and yet they need to grow and deepen and even surprise. And all of this must be accomplished without boring the faithful fans or losing the newcomers by too skimpy exposition.

Good thing I like a challenge. ;)
