Real life

February 18, 2010 | Real life

Last Friday Amazon added Ranin Seven to my kindle page. New Concepts Publishing released the book on February third. The Kindle version has a release date of February first. That’s fast.

Now, if only the mighty Amazon could find the cover art…

Real people are made from basic chemicals, a spark of life, and experiences.

Fictional people are created from small, carefully constructed details, actions, reactions, and introspection. Part of the process is prosaic, character checklists, interviews, and bios. There are excellent books on the subject of characterization. Every successful author must master the process of crafting fictional people.

The small rituals–finding images for each story person, creating histories, making playlists are my way of evoking the magic and about as effective as a witch doctor’s rattles–the rituals work only when I believe.

First, I fall in love with the world, the characters, the adventure. The pitfall with this starry eyed infatuation stage for me, is I have no perspective. Each tiny detail, thought, or action seems worthy of being immortalized on the page. :)

Teaser Tuesday

At this point, I have almost as many notes, time lines, and backgrounds as I have actual stories for the futuristic series. The details that support the Enyo Chronicles and the Demons and Dragons books continue to accumulate. The calendars are different, but the adventures are taking part in the same universe and time frame. So there is crossover between the different series.

Finding out what happens next in the lives of my imaginary friends is both delightful and complicated. So far there are three galaxies involved, three different calendars, three different histories….

I’d love to tell your there are three detailed, interwoven master plots, but lying never helps. ;)

Six-pack Saturday

February 13, 2010 | Six-Pack Saturday

Six sexy things to do this Valentine’s Day…

1) Listen to your love, ask pertinent questions, hang on every word

2) Read poetry aloud

3) Make one your beloved’s dreams come true

4) Find some place on your lover’s body you’ve never kissed, and then correct the oversight

5) Write a love note

6) Tell the one person in the world who means the most to you exactly how you feel, or better yet, show your lover how romantic you are

Have fun ;)

Fan Girl Friday

One of my favorite mystery series is the much too short collection of Lily Bard’s adventures in Shakespeare, written by Charlaine Harris (the link will take you to the full list on Charlaine’s site–for those who need more details :D).

I have a weakness for dark and damaged heroines. Lily definitely qualifies.

But, my bigger weakness is for good writing. Charlaine Harris is a master of detail. This is one of those subtle differences that separate the great from the good.

Share the love. Tell me about your favorites authors. :D

WIP Wednesday

February 10, 2010 | WIP Wednesday

Stories start from little wisps of inspiration that swirl into a concept. At least, that’s how mine work. If I get chills during the beginning–the basic premise is a winner. Of course, there’s still the challenge of translating the vision to words–the right words in the right order.

For the project to have any chance at all of succeeding, I need the right characters. I need to understand them, And, I need to capture them on the page. I’m thinking about characters and the strange alchemy of practicality and magic creativity requires, because I’m working on a new story–Calyxia’s Capture, Enyo Chronicles III.

The basic story universe already exists in my head–and in the first two episodes of the series–Dalila’s Choice, Enyo Chronicles I, and Joon’s Temptation, Enyo Chronicles II. Each story reveals new facets of the story world, and the people living in the distant future. Since I want the discriminating editor to approve of my efforts, and for readers to enjoy the adventure, then I need the right characters to tell the story.

Calyxia and her heroes aren’t perfect people. Perfection is dull. So far, Calyxia is the only one I’ve met. She’s sharing her fears, pains, hopes, and dreams. I need to learn more, much more than will ever be in the story, before I can find the right men to bond with her….

Teaser Tuesday

When I began playing with working on the story that became Ranin Seven, I had no idea there were dragons involved….

This happens more and more in my writing. Characters keep things to themselves, behaving as if they had lives of their own. Maybe, they do. Maybe what is really happening is I have a narrow little channel into an alternate universe. This is both scary and wonderful.

What I do is try to make sense out of the snippets I get, video clips, fragments of conversation, and weird sensory input. The more time I spend recording the fragments, the more details are revealed. Until there really is a story.

Probably not the perfect story or the true story, but then the characters are still alive….
