After surfing through a few of my favorite book review sites, I had a partial epiphany. This is the kind of bright idea that hovers and sparkles on the edge of my conscious mind, but refuses to come into focus. Annoying as hell actually, but that’s the way, in shards and glimmers, my ideas arrive way too often.
The beginning of the thought was about being a better blogger and giving readers what they want. Then, the whole concept bogged down as I considered what it is that readers want. Good books, simple enough.
Except how to define good ? When my idea of a great read conflicts with Ms. Bluestocking’s concept of greatness? To say nothing of Ms. Does-it-have-pictures preferences?

There are things I don’t understand.
It’s a long list and it keeps growing. Right on top is the total mystery of why the behaviors and habits that are good for us are so hard to acquire. Adding to the illogical quotient is the unhappy reality that bad behavior and bad habits come so easy….
Share the love, tell me what you find mysterious…

The current story is darn near through the first draft–maybe by next Wednesday I’ll be done.
Once the first draft is complete, I’m taking a few days to catch up with real life chores. After that, I’ll do all my favorite nerdy pre-writing exercises for the sequel to the paranormal romance I wrote a few months ago.
By the time I get through catching up with laundry, cleaning, and weeding, and plot the next tale–the third Enyo Chronicle will be ready for a second draft.
Getting the story on the page is frustrating or exciting, depending on how cooperative the characters are being. Polishing the raw product is a whole different kind of effort. It’s where the pages start looking less like demented ravings and more like a real adventure.
So, how’s your week going?

Wicked the first print anthology of my contemporary erotic romances is available for pre-order.
Included are: Wicked Business, Wicked Games, and Pirate Rules. Each story features a different Alpha male hero and a different deserving heroine. Perfect beach reading if I do say so myself.
Here’s the link for those who still prefer print.

Everyone has a secret fantasy, or two. One of mine is weather control. After years of grumbling, I’ve finally mastered the weather. I’m sharing the secrets with you ’cause I’m such a sweetie.
1) Need rain? Wash and wax your car.
2) Need sun? Fix all those lawn spots that need to be kept moist for the first few weeks.
3) Too hot? Plant the tender new annuals that wither if the temperature drops.
4) Too cold? Leave the shorts in storage and dress in flannel and fleece
5) Need more rain? Put off cleaning the clogged gutters
6) Need more sun? Continue to drive your car even thought some wit wrote “wash me” on the rear window
Sure thing tips, for free. You’re welcome.

I’m rereading a favorite series and the thought came to me that it’s really just one story. Then, I wondered if that’s what all of us write–the story we know, extended and varied according to our current vantage point and how well we’ve learned to express our truths.

As I write, there’s a post-it on my calendar, which reads: Doorknobs, grass seed, gloves, patches (2). It’s my hardware store shopping list and perfectly clear to me.
All too easily, I can imagine the note getting buried under subsequent calendar pages and months passing. Next January, before discarding the old calendar, I idly flip through the months. The modest list becomes a fiendish puzzle I squint at struggling to solve the mystery.
This kind of thing has happened before, a quick note jotted in the margin becomes meaningless a few days later. It’s bad enough that I have to write everything I want to remember down, now I have to worry about understanding my own jottings.
Note to self: file this post under losing my damn mind.

The other day, I was talking about how fictional people are different from real life people. As happens way too often when I’m chatting, I leave off a whole bunch of vital information. Or just plain forget what I wanted to say. This is why writing is better than talking. Even if it takes me days (and it does–sometimes weeks) to find the words I want, it’s still okay.
Eventually, I found a short explanation of what I’d wanted to say about story people here.
