Whether or not I’m conscious of themes in my writing, they exist. Of course, it’s much easier to see the common threads in other authors’ works than those in my own. For good or ill, I’m usually unaware of what’s happening in my head below surface thought.
I’m convinced the sub-conscious is the home of the creative well. Writing means dipping into this well over and over, spilling the contents onto the blank page.
The more writing I do, the more I become aware of my own interior reservoir and the ways it both matches and differs from others’ inner waterworks.
Writing is the practice of emotional nudity. This is both humbling and life affirming. Anyone reading my work knows me to my core. The reader knows I believe in love, knows my quirks, knows my strengths, and knows my insecurities. If I do my job well, the reader connects with some of my truths.
Are there certain themes that resonate with you?

Here’s the mini-blurb for my new paranormal romance:
Desire burns every boundary separating an Alpha werewolf from his Omega mate, but they remain the couple least likely to bond. Only Daniel can heal her shattered wolf link. If he succeeds the pack’s needs eclipse his claim on her heart. If he fails they both die.
What do you think, does it say dangerously sexy?

Finally, I read the latest Black Dagger Brotherhood installment, Lover Mine. My first reaction is disappointment.
The novel has three different story lines, a historical brotherhood episode, a paranormal investigation by an ambitious television star, and current brotherhood’s doings. After a bit of skimming, I skipped the first two, concentrating on the reason this is my favorite series, the brothers. Giving two thirds of the novel a miss is a bad sign. A worse sign, is my connection to the current characters, and those with yet untold stories, is weakening.
There are series that improve with each new release. There are others where the cast of characters never loses their appeal. Then there are those that are uneven.
Sadly, uneven is the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s best hope.
What did you think of Lover Mine?

Last week I had my first toothache. No fun. It hurt to smile. This made me think about those people I see from time to time who scowl at the world. Maybe they have toothaches…..
The real revelation was something I already knew, but don’t always remember. I have no idea what’s going one with other people unless they choose to tell me. And even then, there’s lots of room for misunderstanding.

It’s summer, the grass grows like the weed it is, I have a story to finish this month, all the usual requirements of daily life continue. So I’m busy. Yet, I take the time to work on craft daily. I study craft books and articles. I critique at least one scene a week for someone else. I do these things because they make me a better writer, which allows me to tell a better story.
For me, the real benefit of a critique group isn’t the feedback I get. Although, that is a a much appreciated feature. But, there’s nothing like going through another writer’s passive verbs, purple phrases, and liberal dialogue tags to remind me how often I’m guilty of the same lazy prose.
This is not a condemnation of all dialogue tags, all passive verbs, and all adverbs. They have a place. But, I need to cultivate a rigorous habit of self-examination to avoid slipping into evil ways.

This is my favorite part:
“This story drew me in from the very beginning. I enjoyed the bond that developed between Eduardo and Desiree. The two are a great match. Eduardo is a strong man with a good conscience who will fight for those he loves. Desiree is a smart woman who follows her heart. As the two deal with their own feelings for each other they must also deal with the agency Desiree works for and their investigation of Eduardo. The story flows nicely between the investigation and the relationship. I loved reading about the strong feelings that they feel for each other and watching them show it when they must fight for their lives.
This author brings the characters’ world to life. This story was well written and fast paced. I enjoyed the relationship that was introduced and would love to read more about Desiree and Eduardo. If you enjoy strong characters and ones that follow their hearts, you should definitely check this story out. I know that I will be on the look out for more stories from this author.”
Thank you, Mistletoe
