WIP Wednesday

All the nerdy delights that come before I write word one of new story thrill me. This is like the first giddy infatuation stage of a new relationship.

New stories have no flaws, no dull parts, no sticky parts, and no silent, sullen, sulky parts. New stories are exciting, bubbling over with enthusiasm, and absolutely brilliant.

As if all that weren’t enough, the entire process of beginning a new story is stuffed full of nerdy goodness. A fresh notebook, a new playlist, character bios, concept notes, research, plotting, a synopsis–each of these come before I actually write.

I’ve heard other writers say that plotting and pre-writing takes the fun out of the actual writing. For me it’s like making a rough sketch of a something I want to paint. Some of us are planners and some of us make decisions on the fly, obviously both methods work.

What about you? Does planning dull the joy of creating or add to it?
