The websites I visit regularly change over time. Here’s my current top six:
1) email–the essential inbox for the virtual office
2) local newspaper online–weather, sports, traffic, world events all in one handy stop
3) evannelorraine.com–adding posts, editing posts, checking posts posted–a must stop for the OCD author
4) Loose Ends to read what some of my favorite Loose Id authors’ posts.
5) Evanne Lorraine’s Kindle store
All those pretty covers, sales rankings, I shouldn’t but I can’t resist regular visits
6) my bank account–I don’t understand people who don’t check on their virtual money
Tell me about your favorite websites…
Big screen musicals are one of my favorite entertainments. For reasons I don’t understand the big production numbers that were once a Hollywood standard don’t happen very often anymore.
Last year I saw two movies with enough song and dance to make me happy. Black Swan and Burlesque. The two shows are miles apart. Black Swan is a noir look at Swan Lake with chilling performances and great ballet scenes for the dance fans.
Burlesque is Christina Aguilera’s acting debut and naturally features great songs. As I watched the movie, I knew it was one I wanted to see again and again.
Rerunning favorite movies is high entertainment, so naturally I pre-ordered a DVD from my Amazon friends. .
Writers love ‘call’ stories, those accounts of an author’s first sale. Personally, underdog call stories, those authors who really struggled are my favorites. My all time favorite call story belongs to Anna Campbell . If you click on the link you can read about her journey to publication and a few other authors’ tales of finally achieving a dream.
By the way, Anna writes wonderful regency romances. Reading her books it’s hard to imagine agents and publishers weren’t battering down her door and demanding her manuscripts.
Once in awhile I read an newly published author’s account of how they sold the very first thing they penned. This may well be a sign of great brilliance on their part, but it’s a strike against them with me. I do not cheer for the favorite to win in a walk. Nope, never, unless the favorite had a suitably hard road to travel before becoming the favorite…. I’m thinking Cinderella here.
Are you like me, cheering for the underdog who had to strive for success, or do you bet on the pedigreed favorite?
Years ago I read something Jo Leigh (who is brilliant at it) said about plotting–paraphrasing; plot exists only to reveal character. I’d respectfully disagree, a good plot serves more than one purpose.
As a writer, the plot is the road map for writing the story. It contains all the important check points. If I do my job, never as easy as it sounds when I’m plotting, then the plot ensures a tight pace.
Of course the plot also reveals the characters by putting them under pressure and making them fight through their worst nightmares. Cruel struggles are the very thing needed to hone character both in stories and in real life.
More about strengthening character tomorrow.
Next month Camille’s Capture releases from Loose Id. Time to meet the cast, at least as they appeared in my head.
From left to right: Jaxon, Camille, and Aegis.
And now for the brilliant Anne Cain’s cover art:

For everyone planning on having another birthday this year; here’s six cool things about getting older:
1) With a failing memory there ‘s so much less cause for worry.
2) Impatience becomes a non-issue, because time passes so fast there’s little chance to grow irritated with waiting for anything.
3) Gray hair draws attention away from wrinkles and sagging parts.
4) Lines add character and interest to an otherwise boring face.
5) You can stop doing anything you don’t enjoy on the grounds you’re too old for (insert chore or obligation of your choice).
6) Growing older beats the alternative
What do you like best about aging?
