Teaser Tuesday

February 15, 2011 | Teaser Tuesday

Treeland is the imaginary city where Scarlet lived prior to her adventure in A Taste of Scarlet. This story world has been growing in my head for ages and it isn’t done. Suburbs, smaller neighboring towns, like Daniel’s turf–Cedar Grove, keep the imagined story-verse expanding.

After literally years of building this story world, the first tale happens outside Treeland. Contrary characters!

The Pacific Northwest has been home all my life. Several different towns and cities are familiar enough for me to set stories in them without the need for tons of research. But none of them are just right. So I wound up creating imaginary backdrops for the Treeland Pack Tales.

Would you rather visit a real city or town or an imaginary location or does either work?

    Imaginary.
I’ve noticed a tendency by a few authors who use an actual locale to shift in to travel brochure mode in order to ensure accurate details.
If a story calls for Chicago or Seattle in order to make use of certain landmarks, that’s fine, but I prefer the city sections or neighborhoods/suburbs be fictional.

Now, having said that, I did use an actual small town for a story once simply because no one had ever written about the city, and I thought it deserved notice. I even used six residents of the city as beta readers. Unfortunately, I haven’t found an agent who thinks the story deserves notice.

Either is good—but probably mostly fictional…Takes us away from reality…

Good point KevaD when a book is set in a city I know well and even a small detail is wrong it detracts from my enjoyment of the story.

Hi Margie, thanks for stopping–I love to read about places I’ve never been. And imaginary works well for the escapist.
