WIP Wednesday

February 23, 2011 | WIP Wednesday

Years ago I read something Jo Leigh (who is brilliant at it) said about plotting–paraphrasing; plot exists only to reveal character. I’d respectfully disagree, a good plot serves more than one purpose.

As a writer, the plot is the road map for writing the story. It contains all the important check points. If I do my job, never as easy as it sounds when I’m plotting, then the plot ensures a tight pace.

Of course the plot also reveals the characters by putting them under pressure and making them fight through their worst nightmares. Cruel struggles are the very thing needed to hone character both in stories and in real life.

More about strengthening character tomorrow.
