WIP Wednesday

April 20, 2011 | WIP Wednesday

Scanning through reviews (I shouldn’t, but I do), I noticed the phrase wolf-shifter used to describe Daniel, the hero of A Taste of Scarlet. I understand this is a common designation in paranormal romances that feature humans who’ve acquired the ability to shift into werewolf form.

But in the Treeland Pack storyverse, werewolves are a separate species. Pure bloods can shift to human form from birth. This may be a small distinction, but for me it’s critical to who they are–werewolves capable of appearing human. Not converted humans.

By the same token, in the Treeland world, humans can not become werewolves. Doesn’t happen. Mixed blood werewolves come from a male werewolf mating with a human woman. They may or may not be capable of shifting to wolf form. There’s no way to know until puberty. Those who never shift are latents. Of those who do transition, most die.

Plainly I need to do a better job of making the story world real for the readers.

Hi, random person here. Just wanted to share that my in my experience (all m/m), the term ‘shifter’ is defined as a person from a species with two forms, animal and human. Wolf-shifter, cat shifter, bird shifter, etc. These people are born this way, not made. Whereas ‘werewolf’ could mean someone who had been turned, like it means in the old movies. Depends on the author’s lore. So it sounds to me like you may have done a great job making it real, and the reviewer just has a different way of defining the terms than you do.

PS – I came by way of the Wildfire newsletter. I rarely read the free reads, don’t read m/f and read very little D/s, but your teaser caught my attention, so that is saying something. ^_^ Cassie’s pov was compelling, but I confess I was probably most drawn in by the word ‘dragon.’ Happy writing!

Thank for clarifying shifter for me, Random person. I appreciate your kind words about The Slave Market’s Back Door. I love dragon shifters. If you have a chance check back after May 20th. Galaxy’s End should be in the free read section. You might enjoy meeting Suluth the Splendid.
