Fan girl Friday

July 8, 2011 | Fan Girl Friday

After scanning some of my favorite review blogs, where the tasteful readers wax enthusiastically about tales I found less than riveting, I can’t help thinking I’m too fussy. But it’s useless to pretend that I’m not a critical reader. In my defense, a book does not have to be perfect to hold my attention. I can be seriously annoyed by repetition, rolling my eyes at what I perceive as cheesy bits, and still eagerly turning pages.

Sympathetic characters, or damn interesting ones, are the fastest way to hook my interest. A brilliant story can keep my reading. As can an amazing story world. Combinations of the aforementioned lead to auto buy author status.

My acid test is simple. Do I think about the story when I’m not reading it? If the answer is yes, then I’m going to keep clicking on the next page button.

Not being able to put the story down is a whole ‘nother problem….

What makes a book work for you?
