See the long haired German Shepherd puppy? Absolutely adorable, huh? Smart too. He enjoys soccer, fetch, bones, running, jumping, and hose water. ‘Cause I’m a total softie for dogs, I puppy sat all summer. The lawn is missing from the shade garden. There are new scratches on several doors and the shiny hardwood floor. Traces of that fluffy coat continues to cling to furniture, rugs, and drapes. 
I love everything clean and orderly and even pretty. This is a very difficult state of affairs to maintain even without a large dog lounging about the house. Add a huge pup to the resident senior dog and just decently clean becomes challenging.
A visceral inner conflict is entertaining in fiction. In real life…not so much. 
I’ve heard of writers who sit down and create finished copy. Not me.
My first drafts tend to be breathless prose, omitting many crucial story bits and littered with he said, she said, and then, but… The over all effect of like listening to a six year-old describe their day.
The first pass is just the beginning. The third draft is my usual submission, and that ‘final’ version undergoes further revisions, edits, line edits, and proofing before any one other than my critique bud and the patient editors read a word of the adventure.
Last month my first reader was unavailable for a few days, I decided to read aloud to give the partial its final polish. A humbling experience and a good reminder that I need to slow down to make my prose as clean as possible before it leaves my hands.
Keep your fingers crossed doe me that the gracious editor enjoys the story.

As a special treat for finishing the last book, I indulged in the latest Lori Foster series, Men Who Walk The Edge of Honor. I started with book one, When You Dare and wasn’t a bit disappointed.
Ms. Foster has one of those wonderful author voices that invariably charm me whether she’s making me tingle in suspense or something sexier. I’m always too absorbed by the story to spend anytime trying to figure out how she does it and that’s the biggest compliment I can give any author.

When I consider erotic romances that have captured my heart, they all have a common thread — telling details. Lots of telling detail. This style doesn’t work in mysteries or thriller or science fiction, Nor does it work for every author’s voice or type of romance. Exquisite details will not save a predictable plot nor will they redeem unlikable characters. But by adding the layer of detail that makes a story come alive to a strong conflict and sympathetic characters, a good novel transforms into something more than a few hours entertainment — a keeper.
