Back in the last century when I first started writing for publication, tone was one of those technical terms bandied about on wannabe writers forums. I never had a clue what the term meant.

If you’re looking for a definitive explanation of the difference in tone between publishers or even lines, look elsewhere.

Tone is one of those subjects that falls into the more-I-learn-the-less-I-know category. Here why, tone isn’t static, publishers change, lines change, and objectivity about my own work is hard to come by, this definitely applies to tone. I think tone is more subtle than voice, which translates to undetectable.

However matching an author’s tone with a publisher’s tone improves acceptance and sales. This is one of those areas where readers have it all over authors. Readers understand tone very well. They know the kind of stories they like and where to find them.

Do you have favorite publishers? Is there a particular line of fiction you love? Inquiring minds want to know!
