Reading off the page

October 24, 2014 | Fan Girl Friday

Earlier this year Rain Girl caught my interest. The literary thriller was well-crafted and engaging enough to keep me reading, but left me unsatisfied.

Real life has all the reality I need. When I read for entertainment I want a happily-ever-after. The book led me to enroll in Kindle first, which offers me a chance to read titles a month before their official release at a reduced price. An appealing proposition for an addicted reader.

Although I wasn’t coerced or even asked, the arrangement makes me feel obligated to read my selection within the month and to post a review. Disappointed in my first choice, I chose Crazy For Her, a romantic suspense title for August.

The ex-SEAL turned private security consultant romance is the first in a planned series. I adored Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters series and love Lisa Marie Rice’s Midnight men, so I’m predisposed to love a new group of dangerous heroes. Crazy For Her’s hero had a lot of holes on the inside. I’m good with moody, tortured heroes, but he went from hot to cold often and without sufficient cause to make him credible or sympathetic. The heroine stayed reasonable and patient long after I wanted to shake her. That said, I loved the concept, found the prose easy to read, and wanted to like it more. I may well give the next book in the series a try in hope the author develops more confidence.
