Lauren Dane’s stories just keep getting better and she’s prolific. Two of my favorite traits in an author.

Random research, dragons are usually portrayed as forces of evil, but the guy in the picture , zmaj is a protector.
This was one of the things I loved about Dragon Bound. Thea Harrison chose a dragon hero to begin her Elder Race series.
Do you have a favorite dragon?
Crab Apple blossoms from a few days ago. Like the cherry blossoms festival in Japan, I always feel I should stop everything and just enjoy the few, short days the apple trees are in full beauty.
Posted just so y’all know I’m serious about what I do when I’m not writing. For those wanting more details, you’re welcome to stop by Beyond The Garden Gate anytime. Now and then the mood strikes and I post new pics.
What are your passions?
Like any small business owner, a writer has to deal with lots besides producing goods or providing service. As I mentioned in yesterdays’s post, even dream jobs have dull bits that still require attention.
Market is the most mysterious aspect of this business of writing for publication for me. I’ve tried blog tours, guest posts, contests, advertising in both print and virtual venues, plus social media. Many of these are fun and interactive, but sadly none of it has worked as far as translating into click through sales. So what works? The only sure thing I’ve found are writing more and better stories.
Any and all of the various promotion opportunities improve an author’s visibility and name recognition. If you enjoy conventions, cons, public speaking, interviews, and book signing keep up the good work! Likewise if you enjoy tweeting, facebook, and linking by all means go forth and mingle. But don’t neglect writing.
I mingle a little, but mostly I’m here, writing and blogging about writing.
What’s the hardest part of your job?
Holy cow, April is almost gone. Picture me typing faster.
One of my friends writes Flash Fiction — check out Flash Fiction Online for awesome examples of what I’m talking about.
Agog at the brilliance of her mind, I declared I could never write that short. The shorter the piece, the more challenging for me. Seriously, my natural length is a multi-volume epic saga. After a bit of reflecting, I realized I do write flash (not exactly) fiction. I call it blogging.
Have you recently discovered any hereto unsuspected talents?
What? Y’all don’t keep a soapbox handy for when you feel like spoutin’ off a little?
I’ve read a couple of pretty vehement posts about readers owing writers a good review, especially for free books.
Seriously? Nah, that’s not real world thinking.
Stuff I get for free has intrinsically less value than stuff I pay for. Check out the free read section on this site. I give away samples of my writing all the time, as do my publishers. We’re both hoping to entice gentle readers to buy my books. The idea that said readers owe me anything in exchange for the gift never entered my mind.
What I owe readers occupies a major chunk of my thinking time. I owe them a plot that makes sense, even when it surprises. I owe them characters with substance and purpose. I owe them hours of entertainment in exchange for their hard-earned money. I owe them the best damn story I can write.
Reviews aren’t something readers owe me. They are gifts from readers who are pleased or upset with my efforts.
Do you feel obligated to review a free book?
Back to regular scheduled posts tomorrow.

Naturally I want to write 24/7, but reality crashes into my ambition on a regular basis. When I run out of clean undies laundry rockets up the priority list.
When the dust bunnies scare me or my shoes stick to the kitchen floor, I have to clean.
Even though I ate yesterday, I’ll get hungry again today.
Diva dog whines if she doesn’t get her walk and there’s no way I can concentrate on the story with her whimpering.
Just in case y’all wondered. the above is why I don’t write twice as many books.
What interferes with your plans?
