Lately, I’ve been buying more e-books than print. Instant gratification for the greedy reader and so many great stories. Here’s my latest find…
Prohibition. The Charleston. Hard times. Jazz. Foreclosures. Breakaways and cutting loose. Twilight Amery sets her sights on Harlem, where a girl with a voice–even a white man’s bastard from Alabama–can be somebody. Hopping a freight train, she joins up with the beautiful, bitter Mr. Stone and the compellingly magnetic Hector, two Harlem men trying to get home however they can. Faced with club-wielding Pinkerton agents, an inconvenient dead body, and a shortage of money, Twilight and Stone forge an alliance while pursuing their individual mating dances with Hector. Then an old enemy of Stone’s intercepts them, and issues a challenge that Twilight makes the mistake of accepting.

It’s February in the Pacific Northwest. Mostly what that means is it’s wet. Once in a while the sun comes out and the natives get restless. I see them, sporting shades, shorts, and flip-flops.
Bear in mind it’s sixty degrees at most and usually more like fifty, and there’s a stiff breeze blowing. Hat, gloves, and a coat weather for me. Of course, I prance out with Ms. Katie who goes bare-pawed in January….
How’s the weather at your place? Ready for spring? Already enjoying it? Or is it almost fall in your part of the world?
Once the initial period of fascination passes, I can do a better job of cutting away everything except the vital details that reveal the characters.
Heroes, and heroines, need to be complex, but not too complex. Distinctive, larger than life, and yet, flawed, and likable. They also need to be interesting and sympathetic.
The first challenge is always balancing heroic with human traits. The story’s stars have to be worthy of their roles. Heroes need to be real, and therefore flawed and human, but they also need to become their best possible selves. Conflict is the forge that creates character, burning away the doubts and forcing the story star to reach for his destiny.
The second challenge is finding the perfect blend of detail, action, reaction, and introspection to convey these wonderfully complex beings.
The third challenge is capturing all of the above in words, accepting that this is an impossible task, and keep right on trying. As JA Konrath says there’s a word for writers, who never give up, published.
As an author, it still feels funny to say that
, I love my Fictionwise page. I also love my Kindle page.
Fictionwise has cover art for every one of my titles listed, but Amazon has all my titles available, including Ranin Seven, Demons and Dragons Book One …..

I was thinking about heroes and the appeal of the non-human hero
1) Politically correct doesn’t apply
2) Super heroes have always been sexy
3) The fantastic species makes great fantasy material
4) Destined love can be part of his DNA
5) There’s built in mystery in an other worldly male
6) What’s more appealing than taming a beast?
Do you read paranormal romance? If you do, take a moment to tell me about your favorites. If not, tell me why they don’t appeal to you. I love hearing from readers.
Remember the sale over at Fictionwise I told you about a couple of weeks ago? I’m still reading through my new stash of ebooks. Moira Rogers came to the top of the pile with Cry Sanctuary and I loved it. I’m reading Crux now, and am already rapt.
It’s not just me either, Mandi over at Smexy Books was was ahead of me.
What’s unusual about Ms. Rogers is she’s actually a collaboration of two people, not a unique situation. But, the first time I’ve enjoyed the end product of a multi-author story in a loooong time.
