WIP Wednesday
Every story I write goes through predictable stages: concept, pre-writing, plotting, first draft, second draft, and final draft. If a gracious editor acquires the title, add two more passes: smoothing and line edits.
And yet, perfection eludes me.
Back to the current state of the story, this month I’m working on the final draft of Camille’s Capture adding tension, enriching the interaction, deepening the characters–all good stuff.
Now comes the tricky part, I’m also working with a new editor on A Taste of Scarlet, to smooth the last of the book’s rough edges. Meanwhile, A Scarlet Past burbles on, forcing me to jot notes as the characters’ exchanges heat.
My brain may explode.

Teaser Tuesday
Offering a bargain Kindle title directly has been rattling around in the back of my mind for awhile. One of the barriers–aside from the small matter of writing it
–was a cover. My little Scotch heart balked at the idea of paying a graphic designer mega bucks for what I’d like to give away.
Sadly, Amazon’s Digital Publishing platform doesn’t allow an individual to offer a free title, but cheap is still okay.
My friend Stella Price came to the rescue with a reasonably priced brilliant cover. What do you all think?

Six-pack Saturday
Six things I look forward to:
1) Sunsets, sunrises are nice I’m sure but I live in the west so the sunset is much more spectacular, and I’m seldom up early enough to catch the sunrise.
2) The changing seasons
3) Reading a good book
4) Seeing friends and family
5) Working in the garden
6) Writing, this is my dream job. For me, the cliche is true, the worst day writing is better than the best day doing anything else.

Fan Girl Friday
I’m reading Suzanne Brockmann’s Infamous and enjoying it immensely.
This is vintage Brockmann, newly edited and polished for release. The suspense is mild, the romance charming (rather than incendiary) and I’m enchanted.
As much as I like her seal series, which is a whole bunch, my favorite story is one of her earlier works–Bodyguard. Obviously, this is my quirky preference.
How about you, do you have under-appreciated favorite titles?

Real life
The worse the weather is the more it fascinates me. Seriously, if it’s been raining for forty days and forty nights (hey, it happens around here) I’m scanning the forecasts for hints of dry days. When it’s a hundred degrees in the shade–like right now–I’m constantly checking the weather site. Same deal if it’s miserably cold.
Only pleasant, normal weather is ignored.

WIP Wednesday
Summer distracts me, the flowers need constant attention, if only by admiring the the rich pageantry of sensory delight in the garden. When I wander outside to water, or tackle a project, hours vanish with no awareness of time passing.
This is equally true of writing. Sometimes it is a struggle to start work, but once involved in the story I’m lost. While total immersion is delightful, and I count myself fortunate indeed to have work and play that absorb me so completely, too many hours at the keyboard or too many hours digging lead to problems.
To avoid muscle and eye strain, I’m trying a new schedule, writing in two hour blocks with outdoor excursions in between. Adjusting to a new routine is always a challenge, but I’m hoping this will make me more productive.

Teaser Tuesday
Originally, I wanted to offer a free title to readers as a thank you to my fans because I
fans and because I
Scarlet I wanted her to have as many fans as possible.
Sadly, Amazon doesn’t allow individuals to offer a free title. Maybe they’re worried about flooding the market with poorly written works. My delete button works fine, so I don’t see this as a problem…
Cheap they allow.
Since I just sold Scarlet’s story, worrying about releasing a prequel and marketing plans may sound like I’m getting ahead of myself.
Note: for those not interested in the inner workings of publishing, you may want to click on something more entertaining.
For me writing a first draft is slow going, next comes letting the story rest so I can gain enough distance to edit it effectively. This is followed by another cooling off period, a polishing pass, then a submission package is created and that’s polished. At last the story is ready for an editor’s tender eyes.
More time passes (months) while the overworked editors pour over future best sellers, promising drafts, and utter trash. Eventually Scarlet’s story makes it to the top of the incoming deluge. Barring crisis in the editor’s life and publisher problems, within another week or two I get an answer.
If the end result is a contract, then things can, and sometimes do, move very swiftly. Obviously, it would be advantageous to have the prequel out and available prior to main story’s release. Too bad I didn’t think of this wonderful promotion concept before writing, revising, and polishing A Taste of Scarlet.
